Bye Bye Island
Die Auswirkungen des Klimawandels (wie zum Beispiel schnellerer Meeresspiegelanstieg, verstärkte Küstenerosion und häufigere Stürme) lösen an unterschiedlichen Orten der Welt verheerende Folgen in Form von Landschwund aus. Das Buch Bye Bye Island zeigt über hundert Jahre hinweg den langsamen Untergang der fiktiven Südpazifikinsel Bogus Island. Eine aus Wachs gegossene, schrumpfende Form symbolisiert dabei das Versinken der Insel im Ozean. Begleitet wird die Bildwelt von einem wissenschaftlichen Text. Die allmähliche Verkleinerung des Textspiegels verdeutlicht den Meeresspiegelanstieg und den dadurch verstärkten Landschwund. Im Index des Flatbooks wird mit auf quantitativen Daten basierenden Infografiken der Meeresspiegelanstieg im lokalen und globalen Kontext erklärt.
The effects of climate change (such as faster sea level rise, increased coastal erosion, and more frequent storms) are triggering devastating consequences in the form of land loss in different places around the world. The book Bye Bye Island depicts the slow demise of the fictional South Pacific island of Bogus Island over the course of a hundred years. A shrinking form cast in wax symbolizes the sinking of the island into the ocean. The imagery is accompanied by a scientific text. The gradual reduction in the size of the text illustrates the rise in sea level and the resulting increase in land loss. The index of the flatbook uses infographics based on quantitative data to illustrate the sea level rise in a local and global context. The visual language emerged from a series of experiments with wax and its layering.
