Oh Patria!

Wie funktioniert Patriotismus in der Schweiz? Welche Rolle spielt der Begriff «Tradition»? (Wie) ist Patriotismus vom Nationalismus abzutrennen? Gibt es einen gesunden Patriotismus? Mit solchen Fragen beschäftigen sich die beiden Serien, welche aus jeweils drei fiktiven Ausstellungsplakaten bestehen. Thema der Ausstellung ist ein kritischer Blick auf den Patriotismus in der Schweiz. In der grafischen Serie «Welcome to Switzerland» werden aus dem bedeutungsgeladenen Schweizerkreuz verschiedene Kompositionen gebaut, welche die Abgrenzung der Schweiz ansprechen. Ziel ist die Bildung neuer Assoziationen und eine Dekonstruktion des eigenen Habitus. Es werden die Landesfarben Weiss und Rot benutzt und die klare und zurückhaltende Typografie ist eine Anlehnung an den Swiss Style. Die filmische Serie «Oh, Patria!» nutzt die Symbolkraft traditionell schweizerischer Kleidung und bricht durch einen humoristischen Eingriff deren konnotierte Rollenbilder. Die Typografie im Hintergrund ist vom Bild getrennt und bildet durch die Wiederholung des Wortes «Patria!» eine Fläche. Auch hier treten wieder dieselben knalligen Farben auf.

How does patriotism in Switzerland work? What role does the term «tradition» play? (How) is patriotism to be separated from nationalism? Is there a healthy patriotism? The two series, each consisting of three moving, fictional exhibition posters, deal with such questions. The theme of the exhibition is a critical look at patriotism in Switzerland. In the graphic series «Welcome to Switzerland», the symbolic Swiss cross is used to build various compositions that address the isolation of Switzerland. The aim is the formation of new associations and the de­construction of habits. The national colors white and red are used and the clear and subtle typography is a reference to the Swiss style. The cinematic series «Oh, Patria!» uses the symbolic power of traditional Swiss clothing and breaks with its associated role models in a humoristic way. The typography forms the background and uses the same bright colors.
